Medical Expenses: What to Save Before Filing Your Tax Return
By Ravi’s Accurate Tax Services | Updated October 8, 2026
Medical bills can add up quickly. Before filing, gather your family’s receipts and insurance statements so eligible costs are reviewed together. A receipt alone does not establish eligibility: some items require a prescription or certification.
What may qualify
Eligible dental treatment, prescription medicines, prescribed eyeglasses and certain private health services plan premiums may qualify under CRA rules. Check the specific item and required documentation. Claim the portion you actually paid that was not reimbursed, unless the reimbursement was included in income and not deducted elsewhere.
Choose the period and claimant carefully
For a 2025 return, eligible expenses can generally be grouped into any 12-month period ending in 2025, provided they were not previously claimed. The federal credit is calculated after subtracting the lesser of 3% of the claimant’s net income or the annual threshold. Compare both spouses’ returns: the lower-income spouse may have a smaller threshold, but must also have enough tax payable to use a non-refundable credit.
Your preparation checklist
Bring itemized receipts showing the patient, provider, payment date and service; prescription or certification documents where required; insurance reimbursement summaries; and details of payments for dependants. Mark each reimbursement beside the matching receipt to prevent double claims. Do not assume every health or wellness purchase qualifies.
