Your first Canadian tax return involves more than collecting Canadian slips. Income earned abroad can affect your return and benefit calculations, so prepare information for the correct periods.

First establish tax residency

Tax residency depends on your circumstances and residential ties. Immigration status alone does not settle the question. Tell your preparer when you arrived, where you lived, and when your spouse and dependants joined you.

Separate the two periods

For the part of the year you were a Canadian tax resident, report income from Canadian and foreign sources in Canadian dollars. Foreign salary, interest, rent and pensions should be reviewed even if the money stayed overseas. Treaty relief or foreign tax credits may apply, depending on the income and taxes paid.

Before becoming resident, you generally report certain Canadian-source income on the return. Foreign income for that earlier period is not automatically taxed in Canada simply because CRA asks for world-income information. It can still be needed to calculate credits and benefits.

Benefits and family income

CRA may request income from before arrival when assessing benefits. Provide the requested periods and your spouse’s or common-law partner’s income, including when they live abroad. Report zero when it is genuinely zero; do not leave required fields blank or estimate without records.

Prepare a clear income summary

Bring arrival and residency details, foreign earnings statements, bank interest records, rental summaries, pension statements, taxes paid abroad and your spouse’s income information. Separate income before and after residency and show the currency used. Keep records supporting conversion to Canadian dollars.

Our team can review your first return and the world-income information required for benefits. Call 647-300-1516 or 905-798-3785. Ravi’s Accurate Tax Services serves Canada except Quebec.
