Paying rent may help you qualify for the Ontario energy and property tax credit (OEPTC), which is paid through the Ontario Trillium Benefit. Rent does not guarantee a payment: eligibility and the amount depend on your circumstances and family income.

How to apply

For the 2026 benefit, file your 2025 tax return and complete the applicable sections of Form ON-BEN. The Ontario sales tax credit is assessed from your return without a separate application. Trillium combines that credit, the OEPTC and the Northern Ontario energy credit where applicable.

Payments

The 2026 benefit year runs from July 2026 to June 2027. Payments are usually monthly. Annual entitlements of $500 or less are generally paid together in the first payment month. Filing every year matters, even if you have no income.

Before you file

Send our team your rental information so we can review the claim with you.
